Museum Van Loon, the former house of the regent Van Loon family, is situated in the heart of the Amsterdam Canals. Willem van Loon was in 1602 co-founder of the Dutch East Indian Company. The house was designed in 1672 by architect Adriaen Dortsman. The first inhabitant of the house was Ferdinand Bol, a student of the famous painter Rembrandt. The Geelvinck Pianola Museum is one of Amsterdam’s smallest museums, tucked away in the Jordaan district. Discover everything there is to know about the traditional Dutch craft of sailcloth and windmill cloth weaving at the Weaver’s House at Zaanse Schans. You can take a seat behind the loom, grab some rest in the box bed and meet the weavers in their traditional costume. The Weaver’s House served as a weaving mill until the start of the twentieth century. In 2015, the house was reconstructed. It also houses a shop filled with unique gifts.

Luther Museum

This windmill used to grind chalk and other raw materials for paint. It was built in 1646 in the historic village of Zaanse Schans. It burned down in 1782, but was rebuilt quickly and later restored again in the early ’60s. Opening hours: Open daily from 9 am till 4.30 pm. Closed on the 25th of December.

The Czar Peter House is a humble dwelling that famously housed Peter the Great during his first eight days in the Netherlands. In the 17th century, the area around what is now known as Zaandam was a renowned shipbuilding district, and Peter had visited the region to learn about Dutch techniques. Fittingly, the old wooden house in which he slept was constructed from repurposed ship materials.

Singer Laren consists of a museum, villa, sculpture garden and theater. The American couple Anna and William Singer built the Villa De Wilde Zwanen here in Laren at the beginning of the last century. The Singer collection includes works from the period 1880-1950 by artists such as Anton Mauve, Jan Sluijters, Kees van Dongen, Leo Gestel and Bart van der Leck.

In the historic ambiance of a traditional Amsterdam canal house, the Amsterdam Pipe Museum presents an overview of fashion and design in smoking pipes. The exhibition spans a period of 2,500 years, with exciting objects from five continents. In the meantime, the museum has been polished up and looks radiant again.

The Embassy of the Free Mind is a museum library in a historic building from 1622 located on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam. It is a platform for free-thinking, inspired by the ideas of the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica Collection. You will find beautiful prints from the books of, among others, 17th-century free thinkers. Everyone is welcome!
